Question/Answer

What is a Congressional Hearing? How can I locate a Congressional Hearing?

A hearing is a meeting or session of a Senate, House, or a joint or special committee of Congress, usually open to the public. Their purpose may be to

  • obtain information and opinions on proposed legislation
  • conduct an investigation
  • evaluate/oversee the activities of a government department or the implementation of Federal law.

In addition, hearings may also be purely exploratory in nature, providing testimony and data about topics of current interest.

For more information on finding a Congressional Hearing see Finding Congressional Hearings Subject Guide There, you will find both information on ProQuest Congressional Database, govinfo.gov, and congress.gov, three ways in which you can look for and find a congressional hearing.
