Question/Answer

How do I find important journals in my field?

There are several ways to find important journals in your field.

  • The first way is to ask your professors. They are the experts in their subject areas and will know best which journals are the most important in their areas of study.
  • The second way to find important journals in your subject is to make note of which journals the articles you find are coming from. If you see multiple articles published in the same journal, chances are this is an important journal in your field.
  • The most comprehensive way is to perform a Google search by typing in "what are the most important or popular academic journals in [subject area]?" You will see a list of journal titles and will then need to find its impact factor. An impact factor ranks journals by the number of times cited within the last two years. The higher the impact factor, the more important/influential the journal. For more information on this and tools for finding impact factors, see our research guide: Journal and Research Impact
